In the last few years I've noticed something interesting that has me slightly baffled, i.e., many white guys in their 40s and 50s are suddenly rather sensitive about themselves and about their politics. Considering the source (me), you must have guessed that these are conservative guys. What is most interesting is that they are not historically thin-skinned.
I have two theories: 1) others are maturing faster than me; and 2) the American conservatism dominant during our entire adult lives is coming to an end. I readily acknowledge that I have matured later in all aspects of life when compared to the average white guy in America, so it's possible their brains are becoming mushier faster than mine. But, I'm betting on the second theory.
One long-time friend, let's call him Terry, ran away from all interaction between us without explanation (presumably because of an email wherein someone busted his balls about his politics) and another repeatedly scolded me for Facebook posts that skewered his favorite political team.
As someone who took a long time to escape the mental clutches of organized religion, I recognize that change is a slow process and I see that my right wing brethren are struggling to accept this new progressive era in America. I will endeavor to be more understanding, but because I'm a highly competitive ball-buster from NJ....NAH!
