I love these stories and I love ironic statements by politicians. In response to a question of whether license plates with christian symbols, now available in Florida, violate the separation of church and state - Governor Crist said, 'if you don't want one, don't buy one'.
That's priceless.
How many times have progressives had a 'stay out of my personal life' conversation with conservatives where the progressive says, 'if you don't like it, don't get/buy/listen to what offends you'.
Most of the times when I've had that conversation, it was about a TV or radio program that some tight ass rightie objects to. I wish I had a dollar for every time I told a rightie, 'turn the channel'.
Of course the christian license plates violate the church/state separation. Undoubtedly, the State of Florida used public money and/or resources to make the plates - and regardless of what money they recover - they aren't offering other religious options.
You're wrong, Governor Crist.
Before you take ownership of the "Progressive" title, you may want to check on the history of what thay may really mean. Woody Wilson, one of the Fathers of the Progressives, locked-up some 130,000 people for their stance against his "war to end all wars." As your progressives grab more power for themselves and decide what is best for you (fast food bad...tax it; smoking bad...tax it; CO2 bad...tax it; CEOs bad...tax them; SUVs bad...tax it), the rights of the INDIVIDUAL will diminish. And being a "rightie," which ideas/actions, exactly, have been shoved into or intruded your personal life?
And before you start invoking the seperation of church and state, to to the link at the end. The state is now throwing aside that seperation and creating the rules of the church. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/12/30/nj-rules-against-church-g_n_154128.html

nothing would be taken away from you in your examples. you just have to pay more. don't pretend that lefties are the only people who vote for sin taxes. no rights or individual freedoms have been taken away. we don't legislate morality.
fyi, some existing rights were diminished thru the patriot act (many sissy dems - including biden - voted for it, and only those progressives with balls voted against it), e.g., if my cousins in scotland belong to an org that is listed as 'terrorist' (regardless of their goals and actions) then my phone and email conversations have been tapped.
it's only righties who stand in my way of marrying another guy. maybe i need health insurance and my single buddy has good insurance - why can't we get married? heterosexual seniors do it all the time.
stop worrying about my morality.
