The Shrub re-inserted himself into the 2008 campaign by lifting the presidential moratorium on offshore oil drilling (i.e., 3 to 200 miles from the coast). "Now the ball is squarely in Congress' court," the Shrub stated. "Democratic
leaders can show that they have finally heard the frustrations of the
American people by matching the action I have taken today."
“Failure to act is unacceptable,” the president said, asserting that
obstructionists in the Democratic-controlled Congress have been
blocking progress on energy exploration and that “now, Americans are
paying at the pump.”
What the Shrub is referring to is the congressional moratorium (established in 1982) that must be lifted for any offshore drilling to begin. We have record high gas prices and its an election year, so many congresspeople will feel pressured to act, hence the Shrub's posturing.
Of course, any increased production from offshore drilling will take at least a decade to realize. Many people, including our Governator and this writer, believe we should use this time and money to advance renewable energy sources such as wind and solar.
I ask you, Mr. Shrub, 'If offshore drilling were really the answer, how come you didn't lift this moratorium when your party controlled Congress?'
If it was so important, action taken early in the decade would mean we'd be six or seven years closer to realizing production from offshore drilling and therefore, a reduction in gas prices. However, lifting the moratorium earlier might have actually reduced prices, and that would have cut into the profits of his oil baron cronies. The moratorium is only a political football and must be resisted at all costs.
To Congress, including my surfer congressman, don't savage the ocean environment with this short-sighted plan, but keep pushing for alternative energy sources instead.
